Types of Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is the autoimmune reaction where the body’s defense system attacks cells that help in the production of insulin, which results in very little or no production of insulin by the pancreas. This kind of diabetes occurs mostly in children and adolescents, but it is not limited to adults. People who have type 1 diabetes need insulin injections daily to control their blood glucose levels.

Type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a common form of diabetes that occurs in adults. In this condition, either the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin, or the cells of the body become unresponsive to insulin. As a result, blood glucose levels rise.

Recently, Type 2 diabetes has risen in children, adolescents, and younger adults due to increasing levels of obesity, physical inactivity, and poor diet.

Gestational or Prenatal diabetes

Diabetes can occur during pregnancy in women, who were previously non-diabetic, is called Gestational diabetes. It disappears after the birth of a child, but there is a risk of the women developing Type 2 diabetes after a few years. The high sugar levels production during gestational diabetes may affect the health of the baby. Proper monitoring of the sugar levels is essential. Endocrinology is the study of hormones, their results, and the diseases and conditions caused by their deficiency or excess. The endocrine system consists of hormone-secreting glands situated in the brain (pituitary gland), neck (thyroid gland and parathyroid glands), near the kidneys (adrenal glands), and within small organs (insulin cells in the pancreas, hormones within ovaries and testes). Every organ of the endocrine system works in production, metabolism, and regulation of the function of several hormones, such as insulin and other critical natural substances required to keep a person healthy. Various diseases stem from the dysfunction of multiple parts of the endocrine system.
