Leucorrhoea

Leucorrhoea

Leucorrhoea is a thick, white, or yellowish vaginal discharge. It is the most commonly experienced condition in women of reproductive age. Women experiencing vaginal discharge, at first instance, feel very embarrassed and worried about why they are suffering from this problem. Although most women fear and think of it as a disease, it is usually a sign of infection. It is normal to experience vaginal discharge a few days before menarche (before a woman begins her period for the first time), just before periods and during sexual stimulation. Some discharge is normal and essential for vaginal lubrication. However, the discharge may increase due to vaginal infections and may come and go from time to time.

This condition can be quite embarrassing if a foul-smelling vaginal discharge characterizes it. Leucorrhoea can often point to a variety of gynaecological disorders and infertility, requiring evaluation and treatment.

Causes of Leucorrhoea

The most common conditions that may result in leucorrhoea include the following:

  • Pregnancy, premenstrual or menstrual periods and uterine congestion;
  • Infection of female genitals;
  • Irritation due to certain factors such as the use of chemical contraceptives, intrauterine devices, etc
  • Emotional causes such as stress, anxiety, work stress, and sexual anxiety;
  • Hormonal inconsistencies;
  • Dietary errors, excessive use of stimulants, e.g. tea, coffee, alcohol and smoking;
  • Medical conditions, such as anaemia, tuberculosis, etc.

Symptoms of Leucorrhoea

Signs and symptoms indicate that the underlying factors are diagnosed with a specific disease. Thus, if a woman experiences any of the following signs and symptoms, the further medical assessment may be needed:

  • Intense itching of the vulva.
  • Soreness of the vulva
  • Unusual discharge of the vagina;
  • fish-like smelly discharge
  • Yellow or thick curd-like discharge;
  • Vaginal bleeding between two menstrual cycles;
  • Severe pain or menstrual cramps in the lower part of the abdomen;
  • Pain during and after sex;
  • Blood during or after sex;
  • Pain while passing urine;
  • Vaginitis: the inflammation of the vagina which may result in discharge, itching and pain. The cause is usually a change in the normal balance of vaginal bacteria or an infection.
  • Lesions of the skin around the vagina;
  • vulvae oedema (swelling of the vagina);
  • Lower back pain

Leucorrhoea – Diagnosis

Clinical diagnosis is based on the detailed clinical history of the complaint, namely:

  • Length of the complaint;
  • type of fungal infection;
  • The rate of sexual intercourse;
  • Consistency, colour and smell of the discharge;
  • Modality of time when it tends to increase;
  • The history of contraception.
  • Physical examination is essential to identify the inflammation and to help identify and confirm the type of infection.
  • Blood tests: blood tests, if necessary, may be recommended by our doctors.
